Four Reverse Tropes we saw in Queen of Tears

Who is visiting an optician with me?

Alert: Spoilers throughout

You should not be too surprised by this question because I just finished watching Viewers in Tears Queen of Tears and what I can say is that my tear glands suffered a great deal of maltreatment for the past few hours and I have writer Park to blame for that.

Although this piece is not a review, I have a few things to rant about before getting to business.

First, I need to know who hired writer Park to traumatize us all because why did Delulu Eun Seong make us suffer so much? She probably gave us a not-so-happy but happy ending because of pressure, but I will address that in her next work.

The second thing I want to rant about is that I think Vincenzo (Song Joong Ki) did not complete his cameo appearance in the drama. I mean, why did delulu Eun Seong die just like that after all he made us go through? Yes, yes, I know you want to tell me about how he was shot from different angles, but I would have been more fulfilled if he had died like Jang Jun Woo (Ok Taecyeon) from Vincenzo. (thinks in deadly fulfillment)

However, If I am being real, writer Park deserves her flowers, and talking about the stellar performance of the casts, the series was worth every minute of our time.

Back to business. My creative side could not help but notice some ‘not so common’ tropes we saw in the series, and this is me pointing them out.

Let's see if you caught onto them as well.

Mr. Cinderella

Let me borrow from the words of Mr. Kim (Baek Hyun-woo's friend), arguably, Baek Hyun-woo has to be the first Mr Cinderella in the history of K-dramas, even from his previous K-Drama features. I mean, in other series, like Business Proposal, WWW Secretary Kim, and more, it was always the poor female leads who would marry into a rich family and all of that, but Baek Hyun Woo decided to break that stereotype and became Cinderella himself. Not bad!

Exclusionary Bride’s Family

Speaking of mistreatment in Korean screen marriages, I think the groom’s family mostly takes the lead, especially the mother-in-law. The whole charade of ‘You are not good enough for my son blah blah blah’ (Rolls eyes in ‘not good enough.’ Who asked to marry your son in the first place if not the writer and director making things happen)?

A very good example of this is ‘Marry My Husband,’ however, Baek Hyun Woo replaced Kang Ji Won (Park Min Young) in Queen of Tears.

Did you see the way he was treated? For me, I think Baek Hyun Woo was lenient in dealing with that family. If it was me... Oh! It can’t be me. *reluctantly switches off delulu*

Falling Out to Fall in Love Again

Who else thought the Beak and Hong marriage was a contract marriage at first before finding out they actually got married because they were in love?

I mean, I thought it was a contract marriage or a marriage of convenience from the opening scene, but it came as a surprise when I realized they got married for love and then divorced to marry again. That’s definitely different from what we've been fed from other love stories like Love In Contract, Perfect Marriage Revenge, and many more dramas that either use the contract-to-affection trope or enemies-to-lovers tropes.

A Loving Aunt

Do we all agree that loving aunts and conglomerate families don’t agree together in both real life and on screen? But we definitely saw something different in this series.

I mean, Aunt Beom Ja could pass for Hae-In’s mother in place of her real mother. In a normal storyline, one would expect her to hate her niece and nephew because of inheritance issues and even considering the fact that Grandpa Hong was planning to make Hae In the heiress if she could join the One Trillion Club, could have made it worse. Also, Aunt Beom Ja had no great thing happening in her life (Being divorced thrice and imprisoned), she felt too good to be true but thankfully; she maintained that energy till the end.

That was not what the aunts and uncles in Crash Landing on You and Angel's Last Mission Love taught us.

Which of these reverse tropes did you notice in the K-Drama and which one did you think I did not mention? Eagerly waiting to read your comments in the comment section.
