Real Korean Queens Depicted in K-Dramas

Hey Chingu! Today, let’s think like a queen!

Just as you know, I dislike to be biased. If we have a piece on real Korean kings depicted in K-dramas, why can’t we have one of the real Korean queens depicted in K-dramas, right?

To be honest, what is a king without a queen? I guess that’s why the Korean pre-modern era people paid great attention to the selection of a queen, including the banning of marriage nationwide when the king or crown prince is getting set to wed, especially in the Joseon dynasty. I mean, the queen, otherwise known as the queen consort, is as important as the king.

So if you are a Korean history lover, this is for you. Here are 5 Korean queens who were characterized in K-dramas.

Queen Dangyeong of Joseon (Queen for seven days)

Queen Dangyeong of Joseon is the first queen consort of King Junjong, the 11th king of the Joseon dynasty.

This queen was probably still settling down in her position as the queen consort after being a princess consort since she was 13 years old. However, her joy was short-lived when she was deposed only after seven days of being queen consort. Her story was depicted in the K-series “Queen for Seven Days” characterized by actress “Park Min Young”

Queen Cheorin of Joseon (Mr Queen)

Queen Cheorin was the wife of King Cheoljong of Joseon, the 25th ruler of the dynasty. While the K-Drama ‘Mr. Queen' is a mixture of facts and fiction, but the story still tells us little about Queen Cheorin depicted by the actress ‘Shin Hye Sun’

Queen Jeongsun of Joseon (The Red Sleeve)

Queen Jeongsun is another Korean queen consort characterized in the K-Drama ‘The Red Sleeve.’ The queen was the second wife and queen consort of Yeongjo, the 21st king of the Joseon dynasty.

In the K-Drama ‘The Red Sleeve’ actress Jang Hee Jin characterized her.

Queen Seondeok of Silla (Queen Seondeok)

I know you were definitely expecting this on my list and here you have it.

Queen Seondeok was the first queen (not queen consort) of Korea. Unlike other queens, she was a direct ruler of the Silla dynasty (One of the three kingdoms) and the first of three female rulers of the dynasty.

The period drama ‘Queen Seondeok’ was based on her story. The series explained her early strive and how she rose to the throne.

Actress Lee Yoo-won played the role of the queen in this series.

Queen Wongyeong of Joseon (Joseon Exorcist)

Queen Wongyeong was the wife and queen of King Taejong, the 3rd king of the Joseon dynasty. She went from being the crown princess to the queen after King Taejong became king.

Seo Young-hee characterized her in the period drama ‘Joseon Exorcist.’

Although the list goes on and there are other Korean queens characterized in K-dramas, this is a list of the most popular ones and you can definitely look forward to another one.

My favorite queen is Queen Dangyeong of Joseon. You guessed right, it's because of Park Min Young.
