5 Legendary Kdramas That Will Make You Fall in Love with South Korea

5 Legendary Kdramas That Will Make You Fall in Love with South Korea - featured image

One of the most beautiful things about Korean dramas is how they quietly introduce you to Korea itself. Beyond the romance and suspense, K-dramas showcase everyday life, traditions, food, landscapes, and the warmth that makes Korean culture so fascinating.

Also worthy of honourable mention on this list, of course, is the visuals.

If you’ve ever watched a drama and suddenly wanted to visit Seoul, try Korean food, or even learn the language, you’re not alone.

Here are 5 K-dramas that capture the charm of Korea so well that they might just make you fall in love with the country.

Crash Landing on You

Few dramas have captured international audiences the way this one did. The story begins when a South Korean heiress, played by Son Ye Jin, accidentally paraglides into North Korea and meets a reserved but kind-hearted soldier played by Hyun Bin.

Beyond the romance, the drama paints a surprisingly warm picture of community life. The friendships among the village women, the everyday struggles of the soldiers, and the quiet acts of kindness throughout the story give viewers a deeper look into Korean values such as loyalty, family, and compassion. In its entirety, the drama paints a picture of community and camaraderie so relatable that you can't help but want to be among the humans illustrated in this story.

Goblin (Also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God)

This fantasy masterpiece blends mythology, romance, and breathtaking scenery. The story follows an immortal goblin, played by Gong Yoo, who searches for the one person who can end his eternal life, aka his bride (WHAT?!), played by the amazing Kim Go Eun.

What makes the drama unforgettable is its atmosphere. From snowy streets and quiet cafés to traditional architecture and poetic dialogue, the show feels like a love letter to Korean storytelling and aesthetics. Not only does this drama have a very immersive story, with great relationships and enough hilarity to balance out the heavy moments, it was also filmed in Korea and Canada, which made for some very pleasing wallpaper-worthy images.

Reply 1988

If you want to experience Korean culture in its most heartfelt form, this drama is just right for you. To date, this remains the most nostalgic K-Drama I have ever experienced.

Set in a small neighborhood in Seoul during the late 1980s, the story revolves around families who live side by side and treat each other like relatives. Meals are shared, doors are always open, and everyone knows everyone’s business. Think warm tones, faded clothes, music on the radio, first love experiences, simpler times, and neighbors you can trust.

The series beautifully portrays Korean family life, friendship, and nostalgia in a way that has you longing for a past you never even knew about. Because this drama literally had me missing 1988 when I wasn't even born then.

Hospital Playlist

Instead of focusing on dramatic hospital emergencies, this series highlights the lives of the people behind the "Dr.' title. My favorite thing is how it gives a behind-the-scenes view to the humanness of people, otherwise seen only through the lens of their profession in the media.

Five doctors who have been friends since medical school continue to support each other through life’s ups and downs. Between their hospital work, their hilariously chaotic friendship, their romantic relationships, or lack thereof, and their hobby of playing in a band together, the show captures the warmth of long-term friendships beautifully.

Watching this show makes me imagine a future where my friends from school are still in my inner circle when I'm 40. In my fantasies, we're all adults who still act as kooky as we did in school. I laugh every single time.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

funniest kdrama actress ever

Weightlifters have a reputation for being scary and unapproachable in most shows... except this one. The story follows a group of college athletes as they pursue their dreams while navigating first love, friendships, and personal challenges.

The lead character is the cutest, most chaotic weightlifter I have ever seen in any drama. In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed how this drama portrayed the relationships in this story. Few dramas capture youth and friendship as joyfully as this one.

With lovable characters and an uplifting tone, it’s the kind of drama that leaves you smiling long after it ends.

Honourable mention:

Perfect Crown

Perfect crown kdrama byeon woo seok IU chemistry

This drama is the most recent one on this list, as it's currently airing on Disney. Although this article is intended to introduce you to Korea through older dramas, I couldn't resist adding this to the list. This drama is extremely addictive in all the best ways.

It features IU and Byeon Woo Seok: two of Korea's most dynamic and versatile actors. If you're looking for an extremely fun rom-com, this is a great option. An added advantage is that this drama portrays Korean royal culture in a modernized, easy-to-understand format.

In summary, watch it. Thank me later.

K-drama will always be one of Korea's greatest exports in the media and entertainment scene. Every new drama is another avenue to understand the language and culture of Korea, and the best part? You are highly entertained in the learning process.
