Just like the popular Grammy Awards, Oscar Awards, AMVCA (allow me to include my country in peace because why not!) and all other awards come together to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of celebrities in various entertainment fields, the Baeksang Arts Award is definitely not left out especially when it comes to Korea.
The Baeksang Awards is one of the most popular awards (if not the most popular) in the Korean entertainment industry. It is an award with different categories for both films and dramas. I seriously canât tell you everything about the Baeksang Awards here, so letâs talk more about it in the succeeding articles, shall we?
However, while we are here, letâs do a ranking of the best actors according to the Baeksang arts awards in the last ten years (2015-2024). Here we go.
Lee Sung-min, a two-time winner on this list got the first one in 2015 with his role in the drama âMisaeng: Incomplete Life.â that tells the story of a youngster aspiring to be a professional baduk player but fails at it. Lee Sung-min played the role of a hardworking boss to the youngster, which earned him the award.
Although he was nominated in 2014 and he didnât bag the award, Yoo Ah-in made sure to take it home in 2016 by featuring in the series âSix Flying Dragons.â The series told the story of the foundation of the Joseon dynasty where he played the role of the later king Taejo (the founder of the Joseon dynasty).
If you ask me, the 2017 award went to the best! Gong Yoo in Goblin. While the series is based on a Goblin seeking his bride to put an end to his long life of mystery, âGong Yooâ took up the Goblinâs character/role perfectly and took home the 2017 Best Actor award.
2018 was for Cho Seung-woo (he didnât come to play). After featuring as a prosecutor in the crime-thriller drama that is based on a prosecutor who employs the help of a lady lieutenant to unravel murder mysteries, he became the best actor for the year.
Everybody definitely loved this series, so it was no surprise that Lee Byung-hun won the award for 2019. The series is a period drama based on a former slave turned captain of the US Marine Corps and his complicated love story. He earned himself this award with his captain's role.
When the Camellia Blooms is the love-and-crime story of a justice-seeking policeman and a single mother trying to run a bar. Kang Ha-neul plays the policeman and was awarded the best actor in 2020.
In 2021, thereâs Shin Ha-kyun showing us the good stuff he is made of in âBeyond Evil,â the story of two officers who break the law to catch serial killers and are left in a Dilemma of âwho is who.â Serving as the main lead of the series, Shin Ha-kyun was awarded best actor for it.
Another Sageuk on this list gave Lee Jun-ho his Best Actor award in 2022. Red Sleeve is based mostly on real events and tells the story of a royal court romance between the King of Joseon, who places his duty to his country above love, and a court lady who wants to protect the life she has chosen.
Earning his second best actor award in the span of 10 years is Lee Sung-min in Reborn Rich. He featured in the series as a first-generation Chaebol. He is the Head of the family and founder of the Group. The story, however, is that of a young man who reincarnates into a family after he was killed unjustly by the members of the family.
Finally, recently, and currently, thereâs Namkoong Min holding the best actorâs award after featuring as an enigmatic nobleman who does not give his sincerity to anything, but after getting to know a woman, he opens the door to his unexpected fate in My Dearest. The drama is the story of people who find hope and positivity even in the most challenging times.
Who is 2025âs best actor? We will have to wait and see.
Of course, awards are given after critical evaluations of each performance. However, opinions may differ, especially as enthusiasts from different parts of the world. So tell me in the comments - which of these awardees are you against (doesnât deserve it) and who really earned it in your opinion?
