One of the things Nigeria and Korea have in common is having nosy aunts.
I mean it’s not exactly like they are being nosy because their actions mostly stem from wanting the best for everyone. But it just becomes annoying when they keep butting in everyone’s business and even more so when they extend this gesture to strangers.
As a Nigerian, I find staying in the same space with aunts mostly annoying, but watching K-dramas made me realize they are everywhere and some recurring aunts in K-dramas changed my perspective. At least not all of them behave like a haunting spirit.
When I say recurring aunts, I mean those Korean actresses who are known for their regular "aunt-playing" roles and always bring their characters to life. They are either the divorced aunt or the aunt who has kept a leash on her husband and he answers to all she says.
To keep this short, let me tell you about 5 of my favorite K-dramas Ahjummas, and their filmography.
Actress Lee Jung Eun is that K-drama mother and housekeeper or neighborhood aunt who keeps everyone on their feet. Although she can be caring, you don’t want to mess with her!
Her K-drama features include Parasite, The Light in Your Eyes, Mr. Sunshine, and When the Camellia Blooms.
Actress Kim Mi Kyung is my favorite K-drama aunt, notably because of her ability to switch from an affectionate aunt, mother, etc to one who wants to break everyone’s head and wants them dead, pronto!
You can see her in K-dramas like Welcome to Samdal-ri, Crash Course In Romance, When I Was Beautiful, Forecasting Love and Weather, and More.
Now we have the no-nonsense and mischievous K-drama aunt. From Crash Landing on You to Her Private Life, she’s always serving it hot. Kim Sun Young is that K-drama aunt that wants to be in everyone’s business although she might have good intentions behind it.
Actress Kim Hae Sook passes not only for the role of an aunt but also the role of a mother and grandmother. While some of her roles will make you fall in love with her, other times, you just want her out of the scene.
Some of her K-drama features are My Demon, Strong Girl Nam-soon, Under the Queen’s Umbrella, Tomorrow, and more.
With over 2 decades of experience in the Korean entertainment industry, actress Yoon Yoo Sun is another aunt and mother face we’ve gotten familiar with in K-dramas, although she might look calm, trust me, you want to stay on your lane and obey this K-drama aunt/mother.
Her Filmography includes Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Love Scene Number, Abyss, and Live on. Etc.
These K-drama aunts are what we refer to in my country as “Life of the party” and this means they are people who make a thing or a place worthwhile. I mean, we agree they can be overbearing, but watching K-dramas without them would be very boring.
Who is your favorite K-drama aunt and mother? Let’s see if it’s the same as mine.
