T. sapphire is a writer who found her love for the Hallyu wave after watching the historical drama “Jumong.” She is mainly interested in Korean dramas and the history of Korea at large. Explore her pieces as she takes you on a journey through K-Drama recommendations and keeps you informed about the history of the Korean people.
One surprising thing about K-dramas is the fact that they never run out of tropes, themes, and even genres.
I mean, just when you think you’ve seen it all, you come across some of them that are total spinoffs from the general tropes and all sorts we are used to, and another one of those tropes I want to point out in this piece is the vampire storyline trope.
If you fancy seeing some fangs, here are 5 recent and old-time-worthy K-dramas with vampire storylines that will excite you.
Synopsis: The Korean Drama " Heartbeat " is a fantasy romantic comedy about a vampire and a human girl who have to live together.
Heartbeat has to be that drama that combines both humor and romance with horror. Also, the plot twist does it for me. Although it doesn’t serve the desired ending (romantically), if you are the type who loves to draw life lessons from series and movies, then this will serve you.
Synopsis: Han Yi-na, Kim Mi-sook, and Lee Ji-yeon have been running the clothing store 'Bite Sisters' for a long time. The three fashionable women share a secret: they're all vampires! Han Yi-na had been living for far too long and posted a picture of herself on social media, which went viral and gained her a million followers.
If you ask me, Bite Sisters is a great series with a minimal storyline. Although the series is quite short and I wished we could get more of the other two sisters' backstories, the storyline of the female lead and the male lead was commendable as well. The series is really under-hyped and I hope you see the drama to know what I am talking about.
Synopsis: The power struggle among vampires over the finest wine with the blood of great men started. YeonSeo is a half-human and half-vampire. At her high school, MeoRu has such sweet blood that he attracts other vampires.
I was gonna ask if you think blood can be sweet, but I reckon only a vampire will know that.
Unlike other dramas, this vampire story is a fifteen-episode series, and each episode is only about 10 minutes long (A quick one, isn’t it?) so if you have about an hour and a half to spare, this is for you. The storyline is direct, and the series comprises rookie actors.
Synopsis: Yoon San works as a private detective with his friend Yong Goo-Hyung. One day, Yoon San is turned into a vampire. He remains a private detective who solves cases for his clients, all the while uncovering the secrets from his past.
How does it sound for a detective to also be a vampire? Creepy and adventurous, I must say.
Vampire Detective is a normal 12-episode series with different genres like romance, mystery thrillers, actions, and suspense. The storyline is thrilling because it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Also, most of the characters nailed their roles.
Synopsis: Jo Yang-sun disguises himself as a bookseller after the fall of his family, while Kim Sung-yeol is a vampire obsessed with his former love's double Choi Hye-ryung.
This series is rather a peculiar one as it’s neither a recent one nor a modern drama. However, I am putting it here because I love the storyline and the fact that it's a sageuk. Â
Although the actor who played the role of a Vampire in this series is more of a villain, I am giving more of my support because he’s one of my many crushes (Yes; I am obsessed with handsome faces).
It’s a 20-episode series that will have you glued to your screen.
Although I have never come across Korean lovers who are into vampire storylines as much as other tropes like romance (probably because of its rare presence amidst K-dramas), these are really worth the time to binge-watch, I promise.
Which of these series have you watched and which one will you see next?
