The ink drips smartly over here. Let me take you through the world of my imagination while riding on the lettersđ It's all fun in this corner.
We can all agree that ghost dramas are meant to be scary, right? Those eerie noises, shrieks, and sudden pop-ups of awful-looking images that have been crafted by the props and makeup teams.
However, ghost-themed K-dramas have found a way to incorporate chuckles into the chills and heart-dropping moments. They make audiences scream one moment and laugh out loud the next by masterfully combining supernatural scares with comedic scenes. This proves that ghosts can be more than just scary; they can also possess hilarious abilities up their sleeves.
Letâs take a look at five unforgettable ghost K-dramas that delivered thrills and giggles in equal measure.
Masterâs Sun (2013)
Creepy visuals? They were in abundance. Was it the grotesque water ghost? The vengeful spirit with the burnt scars? And many more. The drama provided enough ghosts to make us scream and kept us on the edge with its spine-tingling apparitions; it wasnât a small job waiting for the next ghost to pump out.
Even with all of these, the male lead, who was a grumpy CEO, had the magic touch of making ghosts disappear, and whenever he did it for the female lead, it was always a scene full of laughter. The way she clung to him like her life depended on itâwell, it did, and how the male lead was trying to get her off him while maintaining his cold nature was so hilarious. It gave us a âDonât spoil my steezeâ moment.
Oh My Ghost (2015)
The malevolent ghost that was always in the background added an unsettling feeling to the romantic comedy. There were several scenes where the antagonist ghostâs true intention was revealed, and they almost stole viewersâ breaths, leaving them holding it in with fear.
The bubbly ghost Soon Ae possessing the timid chef and transitioning from her normally shy and reserved personality to a sudden flirt was one of the most hilarious happenings. Her never-ending attempt to seduce the Head Chef repaid viewers for the eerie moments.
The Ghost Detective (2018)
From their names, we shall know them. The nail-biting suspense in this drama almost made viewers faint from shock. The antagonist ghost in her red dress haunted the protagonists in a chilly way. Coupled with the eerie music, dark atmospheric settings, and disturbing silence that amplified the terror, making even the bravest viewers shiver.
Despite the dark tone, there were sprinkles of humor whenever there was an interaction between the detective and his quirky assistant. Their banters and skeptical reactions to ghostly situations provided so much relief.
Bring It On, Ghost (2016)
The drama didnât even give viewers a break. It started immediately with creepy ghost encounters, spirits lurking around in a dark school hallway, and an angry ghost wreaking havoc in a haunted house. The special effects team took us on another level of rollercoasters with their tension-filled sequences to maintain the horror vibe.
The main actor, who was a ghost-fighting college student, and a sassy ghost who was the main actress, filled the other scenes with endless laughter. Their constant bickering, her shameless attempt to mess with the male lead, and ghost-hunting escapades provided so much comedic relief, especially the scene where the male lead accidentally punched a bystander instead of a ghost. Bro was frustrated!
Hotel Del Luna (2019)
From pale-faced spirits roaming the halls to terrifying ghosts with unfinished business, their backstories added an emotional depth to the drama, making their appearances even more haunting.
The snarky hotel owner, Jang Mal Wol, stole the show with her diva attitude and comedic lines. Her constant banter with the male lead, especially in the over-the-top reactions to trivial matters, was so hilarious. Her multiple switches in personality created a relaxed scene after multiple scenes of horrific ghost encounters.
These K-dramas proved that combining both worlds of heart-dropping scares and bellyaching laughter wouldnât hurt. From the absurdity of ghost-human partnerships to encounters, they keep serving us great dramas. Maybe there will be some time when we can comfortably turn off the lights to watch ghost dramas but for now, letâs keep our lights and hearts open!
