Iconic K-Drama Supporting Roles

You know what they call the icing on the cake? Or to say it better, the pièce de résistance, that’s what some Korean actors are.

I mean, they are not even the main lead of the story, but their presence just makes the story and visuals better. Sometimes, with their sense of humor, they can turn a mundane scene into a hilarious and memorable moment, leaving a lasting impression on the audience, or they can also comfort us or even turn pity-worthy themselves.

Whatever way they come, they are not an eyesore at all, but rather, they come with all the needed spice to cook the food (K-Drama) and who hates them? I am sure no one does.

And yeah, let’s talk about some of them. The Iconic supporting role actors who never fail to deliver.

Kim Young Ok (The National Grandma)

Kim Young Ok National Grandma

Not putting the Nation’s Grandma first on the list is definitely an utter disregard and disregard because not only did she serve us hot in her prime but her grandma goals vibes she’s been giving us for a while are topnotch. And I must say for her age, her sense of humor is on the high side. Should we talk about how she gave it hot to Jun ho in king the land by asking him to peel onions on their first meeting or how she was always ready to peel off Bitna’s skin any time their paths cross in Judge from hell to mention a few. I really wish this grandma a longer life in good health because she is one of the reasons some K-dramas are cool rather than just being good.

Notable dramas: Judge from Hell, King the Land, Iron Family.

Kim In Kwon

Kim In Kwon Judge in hell

The fact that Kim In won is popular for being and always playing memorable roles in K-dramas says all there is to say about how awesome it is to always have him on our screen. I mean, he literally brings all the fun and has you cracking your ribs, like all the timmmeeee!

Notable dramas: The Judge from Hell, Heartbeat, Cleaning Up.

Kim Sun-young

Kim Sun-young Kdrama

Kim Sun-young? She knows why she’s there, what she’s there for, and how to serve it hot like it's nobody’s business. It’s always her body language for me, especially the way she twists her mouth when she’s being mischievous in a drama (Crash Landing on You, for example). When you see her in a drama, just know you just signed up for a wild ride because she’s either the mom who is against something or the aunt gossiping her head out.

Notable dramas: Crash Landing on You, Her Private Life, Crash Course in Romance.

Kim Won-hae

Kim Won-hae side character

Am I the only one who takes a minute to pause a series and have a good laugh out of nowhere whenever I see this man before continuing the series? (better say yes, can’t be the only one with that weird habit). Meeting him in Strong Girl Bong Soon was all the sign I needed to take him as one of my high ranked supporting characters. He’s either the clueless father with hilarious scenes, the ugly uncle scaring everyone with his face, or a villain. Give him any of these roles and don’t ask for crumbs because there will be none.

Notable dramas: Strong Girl Bong-soon, Lovely Runner

Kim Mi-kyung

Kim Mi-kyung side character

The eomma whose blood is always on the boiling side and never calming down? That's Kim Mi-kyung right there. Of course, she can be sweet when the need arises, but don’t go near her when she’s angry; you are at the risk of being beaten with a spatula or something more painful. She just knows her onions, and surely, no one is complaining.

Notable dramas: The Heirs, Welcome to Samdal-ri

Oh Eun Seo

Oh Eun Seo side character

The sweet, little, cute, and adorable Eun So definitely won’t miss this list because have you seen that girl’s outspokenness? Honestly, for a 6-year-old, she does it effortlessly. She’s that adorable  beauty who is good for any little kid role be it the portrayal of the younger version of an older character or just a little kid, she’s good to go!

Notable dramas: My Lovely Liar, Love Next Door.

It’s funny but not surprising how the majority of them are Kims likeeeeeeeeee, tell me you are the most common name in Korea without telling me.

Anyway, which of these supporting actors do you find most cute, annoying, or hilarious? Let’s discuss in the comments.
