K-dramas that Address School Bullying

One vice that is common in all parts of the world is ‘School bullying,’ and we don't talk about it enough (This I can confirm in my country).

Thankfully, the Hallyu world does not revolve around entertainment alone, but they combine entertainment with education (life lessons especially), and this is definitely commendable. Using K-dramas, the Korean entertainment industry has been shedding light on school bullying over the years. And here are some of those K-dramas that address school bullying.

Class of Lies

Synopsis: A highly successful lawyer falls from grace because of one case. He becomes a fixed-term teacher at a high school. Though he goes into the classroom for selfish reasons, he begins to see the crimes and takes matters into his own hands.

Class of lies addressed not only bullying, but it highlights the evil that goes on in citadels of learning, which includes murder. Although murder might sound extreme, the truth remains that these things really happen. The storyline is both intriguing and captivating and the characters, both the adults and teenagers, delivered their roles well.

Bitch x Rich

Synopsis: It portrays what happens after the dirty Kim Hye-in, the only witness to the murder of a high school girl, moves to Cheongdam International High School, where everyone wants, and meets Baek Je, the main suspect.

Just like ‘Class of Lies,’ this series holds another type of bullying-murder case that will leave you bewildered. I mean, with the unraveling of each episode, you find out that even the most innocent-looking of all is not at all innocent. Speaking of the main leads of the series, should I say it’s nemesis that Kim Hye-in met Baek je and became her victim? The open ending is alarming, and I can't wait for the second season to be released if there is one.

Weak Hero Class

Synopsis: Yeon Shi-eun is a model student, who ranks at the top of his school. Physically, he appears like a weak boy, but, by using his smarts, tools, and psychology, he fights against violence that takes place inside and outside of his school.

While we await the rumored second season of this series, let’s talk about the first season.

Unlike the first two series revolving around high school murders and all sorts, Weak Hero Class addresses actual bullying and how victims try to navigate and survive, especially in a situation where they are disadvantaged.

As emotional as this series gets, I can't help but admire the plot and give Kudos to the main leads for their flawless portrayal of their roles. This is definitely worth watching.

Shadow Beauty

Synopsis: Koo Ae Jin, bullied for her appearance, lives a double life as Genie, a popular social media star. What will happen when her secret is uncovered? Because of her looks, Koo Ae Jin is bullied at school and even insulted by strangers.

Although you might not have watched this drama, I am sure it has a familiar storyline similar to that of the series ‘True Beauty'. Both series address the vice of school bullying based on appearance. While ‘True Beauty’ is a full series, ‘Shadow Beauty’ is a mini-series. The series tells the importance of self-love and appreciation. It’s also a call for all to stop judging people based on physical appearance. This mini-series is a must-watch.

Beautiful World

Synopsis: The series follows the story of a boy who becomes critically injured due to an incident of school violence and his family who seeks the truth and fights for justice in his name.

If you are the emotional type, trust me, this series will have you in tears because it has a relatable storyline, especially for victims of school bullying. This was indeed an eye-opener, and it’s a must-watch for every teacher, parent, and even guardian. It shows the world of school bullying, how their victims are affected, and how this can lead to a roller coaster of crime.

These Dramas are all pointing to the fact that school bullying can be both traumatizing and life-wrecking and I must say it’s a vice we still have to work on in our societies and world at large.

Take this as your sign to speak up against school bullying anywhere, anytime.
