Storyteller, creative, aesthete, currently navigating the throes of an immense dependence on Kdramas for equilibrium.
Our main leads are getting closer, and more of our backstory is getting clearer. Some of my predictions seem to be right on the mark with this episode; I'm a whole K-Drama writer, ladies and gentlemen.
We start this episode with Baek Ho checking the group chat on his personal laptop. He finds out it wasn't Mi Kyung who sent the hate message and wonders why she tried so hard to lie. He looks out the window just in time to see Mi Kyung leave for the lab, and we are back to the scene where we left them last week.
As they go to freshen up, Mi Kyung's tummy gives an embarrassing growl, which has Baek Ho asking her to have dinner together. They eat and chat in the break room, and when asked how he happened to be at the lab, Baek Ho lies that he was in the office looking at some papers. Baek Ho wonders if saving the plants like she just did was part of her job description. She wonders why he's asking; will he scold her for trying too hard when she's already about to get fired? Baek Ho responds that he's just intrigued about her choices and tells her he knows she lied to cover for someone on the group chat. Mi Kyung gives him some life advice in response, telling him that helping people makes for a more worthwhile life.
Baek Ho seems touched by her response. He promises her he won't bring up the group chat issue again, and she asks him to pinky swear. After a short, awkward moment, he obliges her, and her face flushes as her heart starts to pound. Just then, Manager Bu and one of the junior staff arrive, promptly stopping the butterflies.
Mi Kyung goes to get some sleep in the restroom and thinks back to the moment Baek Ho appeared to help her earlier. Meanwhile, Baek Ho is in his office, thinking back to Mi Kyung's goal of having a potato in her name. He looks at her resignation letter again, conflicted.
Back at the guest house, Younger Bro and Bestie are chilling and eating a melon when Hee Jin arrives in a taxi. They watch, confused, as she confidently goes to Baek Ho's house and enters the passcode. They're like, "Baek Ho has a girlfriend?!" We suddenly see that Kise's sneaky secretary/assistant has been watching the whole time. Ugh. For some reason, I don't want Kise to intrude the peace we have here.
Ong Ju goes to tell Mi Kyung about Baek Ho's girlfriend since only a girlfriend would know his house code. Mi Kyung pretends not to care, but she's clearly upset about it. Alone in her room, she wonders who would fall for Baek Ho at first, but recalling his wet body from episode 2, she concludes someone can fall for him and joins Ong Ju on a stakeout to spy on Baek Ho and Hee Jin. LOL.
Meanwhile, Baek Ho is complaining about Hee Jin staying over too long. He likes his space, and she's invading. She tries to play the pitiful divorcee card, but he doesn't buy it. She eventually wears him out, and he gives her rules for staying over, including not playing her ukulele after 9 pm and washing her hair regularly.
Still on their stakeout, Mi Kyung is still denying caring about whether Baek Ho has a girlfriend when Hee Jin catches them watching and waves at them. Mi Kyung and Ong Ju run down to the kitchen and pretend like they're not weirdos, just as Hee Jin enters to invite them to her welcome party, giving Hwan Kyung a sticker as his entry ticket.
It's nighttime and Hee Jin's welcome party. Baek Ho grills the meat while the four of them talk. Mi Kyung's irritation increases at Baek Ho and Hee Jin's closeness. She stylishly starts trying to find out how long they've been dating, making passive-aggressive statements about how secretive Baek Ho has been about his relationship. She recalls his asking her out and gets even more upset. Baek Ho, once again, is clueless as to what is going on in her mind.
Just then, Hee Jin asks if they know who Baek Ho likes. Mi Kyung stares, confused as she clarifies that they are friends and talks about how Baek Ho, AKA Robot Boy, has found a heart because of this person he's interested in. Ong ju is having all the fun silently teasing Mi Kyung at this moment.
Back in the city, sneaky secretary Lee meets up with Kise at a bar and gives him the down low on Hee Jin's movements. He tells her she's in Pyeongwon at the guesthouse. We're taken to Pyeongwon, where Mi Kyung is lost in thought while tending to her potatoes. Ong Ju calls to ask if she's the person of interest Hee Jin was talking about earlier. Mi Kyung evades her questions, wondering to herself what kind of lunatic fires the girl he likes. Just then, she receives mail that she's on the PMI Task Force for Wonhan.
Baek Ho is lying in bed thinking about what Hee Jin said earlier about Baek Ho's crush never knowing he likes her because of his nature. He goes out on a jog to clear his head and meets Hwan Kyung on his way back. After making sure to clarify that it's a business-related question, Baek Ho asks him if Mi Kyung can take a hint. Hwan Kyung ambiguously responds that she sometimes can and sometimes can't, which seems to annoy Baek Ho.
The next day at work, the Potato Lab team is wondering why Mi Kyung was put on the PMI task force. The timing is strange since the task force was already completely established the week before. During the task force meeting, we find out that Kise is the leader of the task force. It already smells fishy to me.
After the meeting, Kise pretends not to know Mi Kyung and then asks her to see him in his office. LOL (clown emoji) She silently follows him, but I can tell he has minutes before she loses it. True to form, Kise tells Mi Kyung she's on the task force because he pulled strings for her to save her from being fired by Baek Ho. Mi Kyung begs to be fired, and he states her work and company experience as well, saying no one is a better fit for the job. She retorts that anyone but his former fiancee would do. THEY WERE ENGAGED? Oooh Kise, when I see you Kise.
After some more pressing, Kise declares that he's actually helping her out of pity.
Now he's done it.
Mi Kyung gives him 3 seconds to run away before she takes off her shoes and earrings and goes after him. But he is saved by a call announcing that Baek Ho is here to see Kise. They scramble around and manage to look arranged just as Baek Ho enters. At Baek Ho's questioning, they tell him that Mi Kyung is there to unburden to Kise about things at the Potato Lab. Baek Ho reminds her that she can always talk to him first. She heads out and goes to the rooftop top where she hears people bad-mouthing Kise. She sends them off in the usual Mi Kyung style, wondering why Kise worked so hard to be spoken about like this.
Back at the guest house, Younger Bro asks Ong Ju what she'll have for dinner before he goes out. He's going somewhere with Hee Jin. Ong ju is clearly jealous, but Hwan Kyung points out that he did ask her first and she refused. He leaves, and she remains grumpy.
Mikyung goes for lunch and meets Baek Ho there. He asks her what she discussed with Kise, and she mentions random stuff regarding work. He tells her she should have spoken to him first and passionately talks about being available for her to talk to. He denies that he's angry, but we all know what's going on. Robot Boy is experiencing his first bout of love-inspired jealousy. Awww.
As usual, Mi Kyung matches his energy while defending herself, asking sarcastically if she should sign over the ownership of her lips to him. She's a little too loud, and now everyone's staring at her for being a pervert. Embarrassed, Baek Ho hurries away. He's back in his office when sneaky secretary Lee comes in to ask about the lab's layoff list. Baek Ho responds that he's still working on it, but we all know why he hasn't turned it in at this point.
Mi Kyung goes to hang out with the Potato Gang at a bar, and they give her a parting gift. This somehow turns into a crying session as the three ladies cry about always being together.
That night, Mi Kyung wonders why ghosts are not haunting Baek Ho and it seems they all heard her loud and clear, as Baek Ho suddenly starts hearing sounds in his sleep. The next morning, Ong Ju notices Mi Kyung is a little too cleanly dressed, which must mean she's depressed. She ignores her and walks out soberly to see Baek Ho telling Hwan Kyung about the sound he heard at night. Mi Kyung's fire is back, and she literally lights up as she lies and forces Younger Bro to lie about hearing the sound. She tells Baek Ho he's probably being haunted because of his personality. Of course, he storms off, not believing her.
When he gets to work, he hears the same sound just as he sits in his chair. He's clearly starting to get freaked out as he remembers Mi Kyung's words from earlier. Just then, he bends and sees red stains on his carpet and on the floor leading to his office entrance. Is this... blood?
While he's in his office losing his mind, the other staff members are losing their minds over a huge mistake they made the day before. They enjoyed a spa day in his office, and somehow, they managed to break his chair and spill nail polish on the floor. Since the chair is so expensive, they're not sure how to replace it.
It's nighttime now, and Baek Ho has fallen asleep in his office. He gets a call, and on his way out, the weird sound starts again. Mi Kyung's words keep echoing in his mind as he drives home. As if by an orchestration of fate, a shaman's flyer lands on his windscreen.
Cut to: a full shaman ceremony with Baek Ho praying in a daze. Mi Kyung stops him just before he drinks some portion and confesses that the sound is from a bird. She was just trying to tease him, but he took her too seriously.
Later at night, Mi Kyung tries to apologize, but Baek Ho rejects her apology, telling her to keep being sorry. Looking down at her, he tells her the dynamic of their relationship has now changed, and she will never be able to tease him again. This begins a battle of the sorriest between them - she sends him an apple, and he sends it back sliced up very prettily. She buys her team coffee, and he gets a coffee truck for the whole company. She washes his car, and he scrubs her truck clean. Honestly, I don't even know what this is.
Back at Wonhan, Sister-in-law and Kise get into another one of their spats and she wins this one when she mentions that things would have been different if Hee Jin married Baek Ho instead of him. She orders him to bring Baek Ho back from Pyeongwon, and that's when it clicks; Hee Jin is with Baek Ho.
Mi Kyung is stretching her sore muscles on a foam roller when Kise starts banging on the door. She opens the door to their mutual shock.
We get an epilogue here with someone else testing Baek Ho's chair and completely breaking it. He cries as he pays for a new chair.
I liked this episode so much. As we move closer to the middle of our series, I can sense that our lead couple is going to get together pretty soon. Also, I don't like Kise but I like how the story is slowly pushing us towards his back story. He and Mi Kyung being formerly engaged was definitely a shock to me. I'm still watching Bestie and Younger Bro very closely. I'm almost sure there is something with this pair and I can't wait to see how the drama will reveal it to us.
