Storyteller, creative, aesthete, currently navigating the throes of an immense dependence on Kdramas for equilibrium.
This episode gave us a big reveal as well as some gentle romantic moments. I've also become even more curious about some of our supporting characters.
We start right where we left off, with Mi Kyung and Kise being shocked by each other. Just then, Ong Ju calls, and Mi Kyung runs off with Kise, leaving Ong Ju happy in delulu land, imagining that she's with Baek Ho. Mi Kyung rides on her bicycle to meet Kise at a designated location, defiantly stating that she'd rather die from the exhaustion of riding the bike than ride in the same car with him.
Kise is surprised to find that the guest house is her home and she tartly asks him why he's come around. He's not still in love with her, right? Kise lies that he's come to see Baek Ho, and Mi Kyung tells him he's their guest. Hearing this, Kise goes crazy at the thought that Mi Kyung knows Hee Jin. But he also notices how familiar she seems with Baek Ho. He presses her with questions about how close they are, and Mi Kyung tells him off, asking him to leave.
Back home, she looks at Baek Ho's window as she remembers a little over an hour ago when Baek Ho called her to propose a truce. This, he says he's doing because he noticed how tired she was, and they have a sweet moment watching each other through their windows. He tells her good night in the sweetest voice, and she's clearly very flustered, repeating "good night" to herself.
Kise is back at his regular bar, waiting for sneaky secretary Lee to come join him. The latter has obviously just woken up. Kise unburdens to him, telling him that his ex-wife is living with his nemesis in the guest house owned by his ex-girlfriend. Even as I type this, it does seem really messy. Kise asks for a favour, and we don't get to hear it, but I have a feeling I know what it will be.
The next morning, Mi Kyung brings some documents to Baek Ho's office and he confuses her by being hot and cold at the same time. He tells her to address him properly at work but also wishes her a good day with a smile. Just as she's back with the team, muttering to herself about him, Baek Ho calls a meeting to present the Potato Purchasing Plan for Wonhan. The team is surprised, as the consensus is that he doesn't understand the core potato stuff.
Baek Ho goes on to present a new potato variety, stating that they will purchase the new variety for potato chips rather than use the potatoes grown by the lab. When the team opposes, he proposes a blind taste test. If the new potato he's proposing tastes different from their own potatoes, then he'll oblige them. Mi Kyung boldly goes for the test, sure that they will win, but it turns out the chips taste the same, and she can't tell the difference.
The research team is gathered together complaining about the plan to change potatoes when they notice that Manager Bu is not with them. He was a key member in growing this breed of potatoes, and he will be hit heavily by the change. Mi Kyung goes to find him, and as expected, he's already sober. While she comforts him, she realizes that they have a new variety that might work.
Her eyes get that crazy look again, and she races off to present the new potato variety - maroo - to Baek Ho. This variety will be approved in 2 years, and since it's domestically grown, they will get the best from it. While trying to convince him, she realizes she'll be leaving the company soon and decides to go on trips around different potato farms to track the growth of the Maroo potato variety.
While Mi Kyung prepares for her trip, Baek Ho comes outside and offers to join her. The rest of the Potato Gang questions him on why he wants to go with her. After watching Baek Ho sputter about random professional stuff and his role as the boss, Mi Kyung saves him by asking for them to just leave. The potato friends are shocked when Baek Ho naturally lifts Mi Kyung out of the truck and leads her to his car. They wonder what kind of crazy people they would be to like each other, given their situation - a boss and the employee he fired. They recall Mi Kyung's instruction to call her Mrs. Dog instead of Mrs. Kim if she ever dates someone from the same company again so they start practicing calling her just that.
Meanwhile, Kise is losing his mind over the fact that Baek Ho, Hee Jin, and Mi Kyung are together. From looking at Hee Jin's post of their group picture on Instagram, he goes into full stalker mode and clicks through Mi Kyung's Instagram. I can't tell whether it's longing or regret I see on his face, but the moment is quickly cut short with a call.
Mi Kyung and Baek Ho ride in silence, but she's super uncomfortable. She puts on the radio to diffuse the tension, but the sensual tone has her turning it right off. She decides to make a playlist and asks Baek Ho what type of music he likes, surprised when he says he likes rock music. She expected him only to listen to stuff like Bach and Schuman. He dryly tells her that he has interests, emotions, and feelings because he's fully human. She presses further, asking if he cries when he's sad and when the last time he cried was. Of course, he can't take her seriously. Her diagnosis? "Beep beep, you are a robot man." He confesses that he cried while watching Coco, and she enjoys that a little too much.
She tells him not to feel bad for firing her as he was just doing his job, but asks him to watch her a little more and see how seriously she takes her job. Then, he can decide whether to give her a second chance. Her statement seems to have put Baek Ho a little more at ease, so this time, when she asks him for his song request, he asks for a song titled "Bit by bit, slowly, to you."
Hi, Mi Kyung Ssi. This would be a great time for you to take a hint.
Back in the guest house, Younger Bro and Bestie are prepping for dinner. Ong Ju sees a sticker Hee Jin gave Hwan Kyung on the fridge and storms up to her room, upset. He goes after her, and she confesses that she is jealous he's cool with another girl. She wonders aloud if she's just upset because she's about to lose the guy who cooks for her freely to another woman.
Hwan Kyung loses it and yells at her about how unfair she is being to him. He'd confessed to her three times, and she'd rejected him all three of them, even after sleeping with him once. He asks her if he's a toy or a random plaything to her. I KNEW IT!
Ong Ju asks him to kiss her, and he hesitates, wondering if she's playing with him again, but she means it, so he obliges her. She kisses him back, realizing that this is doable, and they are on to full-on making out.
We're taken to the farm, where Mi Kyung is asleep in Baek Ho's parked car. She wakes up to find him checking the potatoes by himself. He didn't wake her up since she was sleeping so soundly. She's about to compliment him when she finds out that he's been checking sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes. She teases him about not being able to tell the difference and locates them herself.
The next morning, the potato lab team finds Mi Kyung and Baek Ho asleep in his car. They go from being shocked to debating whether the two should be together. It's a choice between his calculating personality and his handsome face. Just then, the alarm rings, and they both wake up. Mi Kyung meets her team members all spread out on the floor behind the car. They tell her they've been stretching and she joins them while Baek Ho just walks past as though they're not there.
Back in the guest house, our new couple has just woken up and is being all shy with each other. They agree that they are now dating and are being romantic when Mi Kyung's voice rings out. It's chaos city as they try to dress up and come out of their separate rooms. But they're not the only ones hiding something as Mi Kyung also avoids their question on where she went the night before. So many secrets.
Kise is waiting to see Baek Ho at the lab. He has come with the key to a country house for Baek Ho. As expected, Baek Ho rejects his offer, citing his reluctance to owe people as an excuse. Kise lets it spill that he knows Baek Ho is living with Mi Kyung and calls out the fact that he hasn't been as focused on work lately. Baek Ho is clearly affected by Kise's words, and I'm already upset because I know Mi Kyung will bear the brunt of this later.
On his way out, Kise peeks into the general office, hoping to see Mi Kyung, but of course, she isn't there and he leaves before the other staff members see him. Alone in his office, Baek Ho recalls getting the business call he was supposed to handle the night before and turning off his phone because Mi Kyung was asleep. He promptly calls them back.
At nighttime, Mi Kyung watches Baek Ho from her window, all giggly. She calls him and watches as he ignores her call.
Aww, Baek Ho.
MiKyung goes to ask Baek Ho why he didn't take her call, and he lies about seeing it. She asks about driving together to Wonhan for their next meeting, and he tells her he'd like to go separately. Mi Kyung is just confused at his behavior.
Baek Ho goes back in to see Hee Jin, who has just woken up from a 22-hour nap. A super power I NEED. She tries to get Baek Ho to confess about the lady he likes by messing up his space. He successfully ignores her until she brings in a pair of dirty sneakers and threatens to wear them on his bed. He finally confesses that it's someone from work, but he's not made any moves. He tells her that when he looks at Mi Kyung, he sees a yellow light warning him not to cross the line. Hee Jin calls him a coward, pointing out that he's always straightforward, except with matters of his own heart. He soberly admits to being a coward.
The next day, the Wonhan meeting is on, and Mi Kyung watches Baek Ho, who very obviously avoids her gaze. At lunch, she waves at him, but he pretends not to know her. She leaves the cafeteria, unable to eat because everyone is whispering about her. She goes to the rooftop instead, where she eats snacks and recalls 6 years before when she worked at Wonhan and everyone talked about her because of Kise.
She starts crying wondering why her day sucks so much. Just then, Kise calls her into his office.
She storms into his office, asking why he called her in. Kise clocks that she cried, but she shuns him, asking him to get straight to the point. He tells her Baek Ho just sent in her resignation, and she's surprised about it being now and not weeks ago.
Back home, she thinks back to all her moments with Baek Ho and cries again, berating herself for being foolish and fantasizing all by herself. She brings out a cigarette, and sees the plant Baek Ho bought right at that moment. She recalls Baek Ho asking her what plant she likes and loses it.
She goes banging on his door, demanding an explanation. He's clearly blowing hot and cold with her, and she's sick of it. She asks him to tell her where she stands with him and he calmly responds that she's a line he wants to cross and then gently pulls her in as he closes the door.
Our episode ends here and we get an epilogue with Hwan Kyung and Ong Ju watching Lovely Runner before losing it and going feral on each other. LOL
I'm not even going to lie, I loved this ending. While I knew Baek Ho and Mi Kyung were building up to this moment, I really didn't expect it to be like this. And that last line? Leave it to Kdrama writers to come up with the most randomly romantic lines ever. I called the couple with Younger Bro and Bestie since episode 4, so I'm not very surprised. At this point, I'm just nervous about Baek Ho finding out about Mi Kyung and Kise, as well as Mi Kyung and Hee Jin finding out about each other. Somehow, I feel like Baek Ho knows more than we think, but all that is second-half stuff, so I'll leave the speculations for now.
