FROM ASIA TO WEST AFRICA - CULTURES MERGE AT THE KOREAN CULTURE FESTIVAL IN NIGERIA

From a little gathering of around 100+ Korean culture enthusiasts to a teeming crowd of passionate cultural faithfuls, the Korean Culture festival has seen monumental growth in the past few years. Established in 2022, the first-ever independent Korean Cultural Festival organized by KVibe Ltd. is back for its fourth (4th) edition with a festive bang. The event is set to take place at the prestigious Bay Water Park, Lekki, Lagos State on November 24th, 2024.

This year's festival, themed ‘East meets West: Culture Reimagined’, is a celebration of the similarities between the dynamic cultures of Nigeria and Korea, and a step towards achieving the purpose for which the festival was created - improving the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Korea. Keeping to this mission, the festival has seen the support and partnership of the Korean community over the years in a fruitful move towards building friendships beyond borders.

According to the spokesperson of Kvibe, Miss Oreoluwa Ademulure,

"Beyond pop culture and entertainment, the intrinsic values of the Korean core like respect, hard work, and cultural conservation are a corresponding fit for our values in Nigeria. The support and camaraderie we’ve received from the Korean community in Lagos is a testament to this fact.”

Attendees at the event will enjoy a lineup of diverse activities from live music, Karaoke throwdowns, dance performances, Korean cuisine and snacks, photobooth fun, virtual reality experiences, and loads of Korean games. This event offers something for everyone.

“What’s important to us is the experience our attendees get from this event. We want them to see that this is home, whether they are Korean or Nigerian. That’s the main value for us" Oreoluwa disclosed.

The festival has also attracted the attention of leading sponsors giving their support towards its success. Some of them include Pocari Sweat, the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, Dufil Foods, KONA BIO, and the Korean Trade Association (KOTRA) among others.

Mr. Cho Hong Seon, the President of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC), emphasized that their association recognizes and supports the festival as it advocates for Korean culture in a valuable and fun way.

In line with the theme, the festival will feature a Hanbok fashion contest where fashion designers will showcase their creativity in creating a fusion Korean traditional wear (Hanbok) with Ankara and a Korean speech competition where contestants will talk about what makes Korea special for them. Winners and runner-ups of both competitions stand to win cash prices of up to N300,000.

Indeed, the event promises to be an unforgettable fusion of both cultures, creating an immersive experience for both native Koreans and Korean enthusiasts open to exploring and having a different cultural experience.
