On the surface, Jeju and Zanzibar look like they belong to completely different conversations. 

Yes, they sit at different ends of the world. While one sits quietly off South Korea and is often seen as a healing retreat or a lovers’ getaway, the other rests off East Africa and is seen as a tropical paradise 

They may sit on different continents and in different cultures, but when you look past the postcards and tourism slogans, the similarities start showing up quietly.

Nobody, and that is why both islands become a mood and the perfect destination to relax and unwind.

Jeju has the haenyeo, the stone grandfathers, the tangerines, and the quiet lifestyle, while Zanzibar has spices, boats, Swahili culture, and coastal rhythm. Meaning both islands carry rich, distinct identities that locals deeply connect to. However, they are still similar because outsiders tend to latch onto just a few symbols and call it the whole story. Culture becomes decoration instead of something lived and evolving. Both islands are proud of what they have, and that’s what makes all the difference and similarity.

Tourism Shapes Everything

Tourism is not just a small thing in Jeju or Zanzibar; it is a major force shaping how the islands develop, who stays, who leaves, and what gets prioritized.

In Jeju, tourism brings money but also rising living costs and environmental strain. In Zanzibar, tourism creates jobs but also deepens inequality and dependence. Different outcomes, same tension.

In both places, nature shapes identity, work, and the rhythm of life. Both seas feed families, define culture, and anchor memories. At the core, Jeju and Zanzibar are doing just one job: being home for those who crave it, whether as a local, visitor, or tourist, and maybe that is why they feel oddly connected despite the distance.
