K-Drama usurped them: What life looked like before K-Drama’s arrival

My Nigerian folks! This is for you.

Regardless of the generation you are from, unless you are a late Gen Z, I am sure this will be relatable.

Apparently, most of us got swooned by the Hallyu wave in the 2010s and our love as enthusiasts got bigger and better with the constant evolution of the internet over the years. However, one thing that is sure is there are screenplays that used to grace our screens as kids and we can even say they defined the entertaining path of our childhood.

They include cassettes, home videos, local cable TVs, and more. Let’s go down memory lane and make it nostalgic.

So here are 5 things every one of us definitely watched as kids before K-Drama usurped them in our hearts.

The Philippine Series

I must say the Hallyu wave is truly a strong force to reckon with because it's funny how it was able to dethrone the Philippines series. I mean, if you and your family didn’t watch the likes of Mara and Clara, Double Kara, Immortal, Her Mother’s Daughter, The Legal Wife, and the likes, then peer pressure has got nothing on you. During these times, it definitely felt like the Philippines series was the driving force of all screenplays, as everyone was always ready to pick up the next Philippine series cassette at their vendor’s outlet. It was so bad that sometimes you have to make an advance booking so you can get a copy before it gets sold out.

Tom and Jerry

Did you even have a childhood if the Tom and Jerry cartoon series that has refused to go into extinction was not part of your daily routine? Like we supported Jerry against Tom so much as kids because Jerry was the little cute mouse who Tom was always bullying. It took us experiencing adulthood before we truly understood Tom, right? Or should we talk about how some of us almost spoiled our parents’ TVs just to get a glimpse of the faces of the human characters because we thought it was our TVs that were not big or even long enough? The Tom and Jerry cartoon series served us the longest.

Papa Ajasco and Super Story

Papa Ajasco and companies, manufactured by Wale Adenuga Productions or this is superstory, a life of strife and sorrow (although we never really heard the lyrics so we just sing what comes to mind). Each series has its own airing days and time that we hope not to miss for anything. I mean, for some of us who really enjoyed these two series, we become the most obedient when it’s almost time for it to air because we don’t want a situation where we will be sent out of the sitting room by our parents for misconduct. Real shout out to WapTV cable channel and, of course, we are indeed nothing but pencils in the hands of the creator.

Power Rangers

Although personally, I did not like this particular one, it was the superstar among the male folks and some females who enjoyed it. I mean, everyone wanted to watch every part with different names to earn bragging rights when they got to school the next day. The rich kids whose parents could afford to buy it for them as soon as the part was released became the storyteller for the other kids who hoped he would borrow them after he was done watching, and the cycle continued.

Merlin and Legend of the Seeker

In the land of myths and the time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom rests upon the shoulders of a young boy, his name??? Merrrrrlllliiinnnnn

Also, do you need a mother confessor to confess you?

I think we all learned to abuse K-dramas by watching and rewatching as many times as possible from watching these two series. They really entertained us and they indeed had their own popularity.

But now, you are all stuck with K-dramas. In fact, it’s now K-dramas or nothing. It’s okay, I understand.

So tell me which of these series was your best then and which one did I miss?
