One of the saddest things we experience as a K-pop enthusiast is the disbanding of some K-pop groups we hope will stay with us forever for some reasons.
It’s not just sad but heartbreaking, and we’ve got no choice but to accept and deal with it because some of these groups made us cry when they disbanded, and most of us probably got comforted by finding another K-pop group to support.
However, let’s go down memory lane a bit today. Here are 8 popular girl groups that disbanded that we miss so much and things you should know about them.
This girl group “Wonder Girls” debuted with five members officially in 2007 with their single titled “Irony.” They released many songs, went on tours, went on a break, resumed, changed members, and earned several awards within 10 years. JYP Entertainment, which had formed the girl group, later announced the disbanding of the group after dropping a single in celebration of their 10th year anniversary in 2017. Â
After the reality competition show “Produce 48”, which aired on Mnet, the Korean-Japanese girl group with 12 members was formed in 2018. They debuted with an EP titled "Color*Iz." They gained so much attention as a Korean-Japanese girl group as 3 of the band members were Japanese. However, this group disbanded in 2021, and even though CJN Entertainment tried to reunite the group, it didn’t work.
GFriend is a 6 member group that debuted in 2015 with the EP “Season of Glass. The group was formed by the Source Music record label, and they got not only attention but well-deserved awards. They disbanded in 2021 when each of them completed their contract with the record label and left the company.
Rather than a single record label, I.O.I was formed by picking 11 members from various record labels on Produce 101 They debuted in 2016, with the EP titled “Chrysalis.” They went on to release a few other songs, and since it was a temporary group, they disbanded in 2017. Although there was a plan for a reunion, it fell through.
This much-loved girl group got together as a group in 2015 and released their first EP First “Love” with a five-member lineup under Cube Entertainment. This group did not particularly announce their disbanding but stopped being active in 2020, and most of the founding members and those who joined had left the agency to remain just one member.
The Stellar girl group was active from 2011 to 2018 before they disbanded. The group had 8 members in total (Founding and added members inclusive). They debuted under The Entertainment Pascal with “Rocket Girl,” which didn’t really garner attention. They operated as a group until 2018 when some members left the group.
This girl group disbanded in 2021 after debuting with their EP its title track "Dream Candy" in 2015. The group had a total of 8 members while they operated under DPS entertainment. Their disbandment unfortunately followed a bullying accusation from a past member of the group.
Bvndit debuted in 2019, with the single album “Bvndit, Be Ambitious” with 5 members under MNH entertainment. The group was disbanded after its third-year anniversary in 2022 when all members terminated their contracts with the agency.
If you are a long-time K-pop lover, then you should know and remember 5 K-pop groups from this list.
