As a Nigerian, especially if you are from my tribe (Yoruba), then there is a 101% chance that you love spicy food, and, just like alcohol, you can hold your spice. If you’ve made your trip to Korea or you are just making your plans, and you don’t mind feeling some hot goodness on your taste buds, then this is your sign to create a perfect bucket list for trying the spiciest foods in Korea.
On that note, here are 5 of the spiciest foods you should try in Korea.
Of course, the first food on my list is one of the most popular Korean dishes, which is mainly a street dish but can also serve as a homemade dish. Tteokbokki (Spicy or simmered rice cake) is a dish made from small-sized garae-tteok (long, cylindrical rice cakes made with non-glutinous rice flour) called tteokmyeon. Other ingredients used in making this dish include fish cake, boiled eggs, and scallions.
Although the hotness and spiciness of Tteokbokki depends on the sauce if you come across ones with the spiciest sauce, then I am sure your taste buds will experience the delicious goodness and spiciness you crave.
Dakbal, which means spicy chicken feet is a hot spice-coated chicken feet in Korea and I guess everyone actually enjoys spicy chicken feet because this is a street food common to Nigeria as well. If you’ve tasted the spiciness of the Nigerian chicken feet, I am sure you want to try that in Korea as well. Don’t forget to tell me which does it for you better when you finally try the Korean chicken feet.
Buldak also known as fire chicken (Not to be confused with Buldak Ramyeon), is a Korean dish that consists of bite-sized fried or grilled chicken served with a hot sauce made from chili powder, chili paste, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, starch syrup and other ingredients topped with a generous amount of melted cheese.
From the name ‘fire chicken,’ you already know that this is as spicy as it can get. Although this dish is no longer common in Korea, it doesn’t mean you can’t find it. If you are looking to use some spiciness to relieve stress, then Buldak cuisine is what you should try in Korea.
I know you were probably not expecting Ramyeon on this list because of its popularity, affordability, and the fact that there are several ways to cook Ramyeon. However, the best way to enjoy Ramyeon is with extra spice (which most people prefer anyway). If you want to burn your tongue and enjoy as much spice as you want, get the most spicy Ramyeon you can find like the Buldak Ramyeon which actually got its inspiration from the Buldak chicken dish, and you can even add extra spice as you desire. The most interesting part of this is that you don’t have to get to Korea before you can enjoy this dish as you can find it in some supermarkets around the country or Korean dish-serving restaurants.
Galbi Jjim (braised short ribs), is a dish of short ribs that is prepared using different ingredients like soy sauce, garlic, pepper, sesame oil, and more. The spiciest of this dish is served on Galbijjim Street in Dongin-dong in Daegu. Although the spicy in this dish is adjusted according to preferences, the spicy version of this dish will have you begging for milk to soothe the spiciness, and you might need a duplicate tongue after eating this dish. If you think there’s no amount of spice you can’t hold, then boast about it only after trying this dish.
Which of these dishes have you tried? Also, let me know in the comments; do you think these foods will do it for you?
How will I get to Korea like this to try all these? Oh chim!
