When K-Drama Is Not K-Drama-ing Anymore

Once upon a time, watching a K-drama was the magic we all needed. All we wanted to watch was just one episode then, but suddenly we were still giggling at our screens at 3 a.m. Racing hearts, laughter, tears, and falling in love with the characters were the order of the day. Those were the days filled with strong and unforgettable feelings.
However, lately, it looks like evolution has occurred. Some people say new dramas feel cringe; they point out forced and rushed romance and chemistry not giving the tingling sensation anymore. Others expressed how they couldn’t finish two episodes without sleeping off because the excitement had vanished into the thin air.
Listening to these stories, it looks like the butterflies are gone. Even the soundtracks that used to be one of the sources of attraction do not stay in your head like before. Dear friend, you are not alone if you feel this way, so come closer.
Now, let’s be logical. It is not that K-dramas have gotten worse; it could be that you have changed. And yes, it’s not a bad thing because change will forever be constant in humans’ lives. Years ago, everything felt new to you. The slow-burn romance hit the core you didn’t know existed; the rich CEO gave you fantasies you probably wouldn’t feel if you didn’t watch K-dramas.
Even the poor but strong female lead stories were told in such a way that made you want to put yourself in such shoes. Now, you have seen these things over and over, several times. Of course, it would no longer surprise you. The brain has gotten familiar with it to the extent it can predict some twists and turns, lowering the dopamine rush.
Also, many dramas are now made for global audiences. This has influenced the style and storytelling. The focus is now on visuals, fast-paced stories, and deeper emotions that might not produce the right butterflies you wanted. This can make longtime fans feel disconnected.
But! You still want to watch and enjoy K-dramas. You want to escape real life and find the momentary joy in K-drama just like in previous years. So what can you do?
Take A Break
First, take a break. It is okay to rest from all the overwhelming changes that have crept into the K-drama style. Do not force yourself to watch what you are not enjoying.
Try Something Else
Second, try a different genre. If romance feels boring, try thriller, historical, or slice-of-life. There is no rule that says K-dramas must be only about romance. There are so many life hacks to pick up from K-dramas. They might just be perfect for your level of life right now.
Rewatch
If you have some old favorites that will never get boring to you, you can watch them again. Sometimes, nostalgia reminds you why you loved K-dramas in the first place and can open your mind to accommodate the growth.
Check Your Stance
Do you usually play detective while watching K-dramas or try to link them to real life? As much as some things can be relatable, most of these dramas are fictitious. If you are bent on being logical, you might miss out on the fun.
Spice It Up
You can also prepare your brain to enjoy the moment. Instead of just rolling around in bed, you can set the ambience to fit the K-drama mood. Put off the lights and leave the LEDs on, grab a bowl of popcorn, a blanket if needed, and try to soak into the moment. Sometimes, you just need to connect mentally.
Let Go
If you have truly outgrown it, that is fine too. Tastes change, and you are allowed to evolve. Change is inevitable, so don’t feel bad or punish yourself. You can try out other things that make you happy. Of course, the door is wide open for days you wish to come back.
K-drama may not be K-drama-ing right now, and your feelings are valid. But maybe, one day, a new story will surprise you again.
