I know we all can count a few of the webtoons that have been adapted into actual K-dramas on our screen! These awesome series are taking the world by storm, and they have become a delicious goldmine for directors.
K-drama directors have continually hit our screens with the adaptions webtoon series and they have always been bangers. Not only do they deliver perfect and captivating storylines, but they also serve stunning visuals that make us drool in front of our TVs, and of course, they will be unforgettable in our K-drama memory store.
Here are some of the webtoon adaptations that got us hooked:
Despite being challenged and surrounded by the school’s violence and chaos, a high student strived for academic success. This webtoon covers the mix of actions and emotional moments that will get fans excited to see how he achieves his academic dreams amidst struggles. The sweetest part? It’s already airing on our screens, and Hwang Min Hyun is doing a fantastic job of keeping viewers hooked.
This was adapted from a webtoon titled "Tomorrow's Best." A passionate fan time-traveled to save her idol from a tragic fate and carried the viewers on a thrilling journey throughout the years. Byun Won Seok played the character Ryu Sun Jae and Kim Hye Yoon took the role of Im Sol as they delivered perfect chemistry on our screens in 2024.
A surgeon got pulled into a comic book universe where she met her hero. Lee Jong Suk took on the role of Kang Chul, who was charismatic, and Han Hyo Joo played the role of the doctor, Oh Yeon Joo. It delivered a perfect mix of fantasy, romance, and mystery.
What a quirky one! A woman is cursed to transform into a dog whenever she kisses someone; what a romantic disaster. The curse was to live with her until she got another kiss from her first love. In 2023, Cha Eun Woo and Park Gyu Young brought this romance and comedy blend to life on our screens and performed excellently. Don’t you want to find out too?
Lim Ju Kyung, a young lady, masters the art of makeup to transform herself into a beauty goddess as she passes through high school life in order to conceal her bare face. Moon Ga Young, Cha Eun Woo, who played Lee Su Ho, and Hwang In Yeop as Han Seo Jun showed us what a sizzling K-drama love triangle looked like.
What a loud drama! This webtoon shook the world of K-drama as viewers sympathized with Kang Ji Won, who lost her life to a cheating husband while suffering from cancer. The drama took an interesting turn when she was given a second chance at life to exact revenge on her cheating husband and best friend.
A 47-year-old gangster returned to high school in the body of a bullied high school student, and he dealt with the bullies while achieving academic success. It was played by Yoon Chan Yong, who took the double role of Song Yi Heon and Kim Deuk Pal, the ajhussi. The drama was filled with hilarious moments despite its dark plot and kept viewers hooked with just eight episodes in 2024.
As interesting as these webtoons turn out to be, it’s actually the result of the rigorous work that writers and directors have put into it behind the scenes. The limitations of the chapters into episodes while maintaining the originality of the plots can be nerve-wracking. These adaptations have certain high expectations different from other K-dramas, and any deviation can lead to mixed reactions.
Even with all these struggles, we have always been served nothing but fresh and immersive experiences. Webtoons adaptation is a treasure island for the entire crew and we can’t wait to see more of them in the coming years.
