K-dramas with the all-time Cliche- Amnesia

Let’s face it! K-Drama writers have a knack for providing us with scrum-delicious dramas. However, when they’re running out of fresh twists, they dust off the all-time favorite 'amnesia and probably reinvent it in the most acceptable way.

Moreover, whatever way it is implemented, you will agree with me that amnesia has become as essential to K-dramas as kimchi is to Korean cuisine.

Is it realistic? Probably not. Is it ridiculously overused? Absolutely. Do we still love it? You bet, because why do we still love and embrace even the recent dramas with this trope?

What dramas? In case you are asking that question, here are 5 recent dramas incorporating the amnesia trope.

Eccentric Chef Moon

The drama is a romantic comedy that follows the life and love of a star chef Moon Seung-mo and a reckless famous fashion designer Yoo Yoo-jin who moves to Seoha Village after losing her memory in an accident, and they meet each other at Seoha Village.

The storyline of this drama was properly woven with the Amnesia and romance tropes simultaneously, and it was such an amazing blend. Rather than make us get tired of it, the series breathes new life into the amnesia trope by focusing more on the relationships Yoo-jin builds in Seoha, particularly with Moon Seung-mo, and if you’ve not seen it, I promise you will love this one.

Crazy Love

Crazy Love tells the love story of the CEO of GOTOP, South Korea's top math institute who pretends to have amnesia after injuring himself in a car accident, and his introvert and quiet secretary, who is suffering from multiple diagnoses.

Aside from being an appealing romantic comedy that will leave your teeth out almost all the time, Crazy Love uses amnesia in another way, and this time, it is pretense. Rather than have the character have real amnesia, the story comes with a twist, a twist, revealing the male lead was simply pretending to have amnesia, and that made it even more interesting. So if you are tired of seeing actual amnesia dramas, this one will make you stay glued to your screen. After all, it is not real and I am sure you will be curious to see how it plays out.

Bad Memory Eraser

This series tells the story of Lee Goon, a former tennis star whose career was tragically cut short by an injury, leading him to seek a "memory eraser" to erase his painful past and regain his confidence.

Self-induced amnesia twist? Absolutely satisfying! I mean, we are already seeing a break away from the normal, right? In fact, with this, can we still call the amnesia trope a cliche? I don’t think so. The story centers on the protagonist's erased painful memories and although the trope risks predictability, it is still worth the watch.

100 Days my Prince

This Sageuk is about a Joseon crown prince who loses his memory in an accident and lives among the commoners while he recovers.

Just so you know, even historical dramas are not exempted from this cliche, and that’s why 100 Days My Prince is present on this list. It successfully blends humor and mystery to drive the plot and with the amnesia trope, it was just perfect for the historical drama!

Find Me in Your Memory

Find Me in Your Memory is a love story between a man who remembers every second of his life and a woman who forgot her painful past to live. Lee Jung-hoon works as an anchorman at a broadcasting station. He has hyperthymia, a condition that allows him to remember nearly every moment in his life. Meanwhile, Yeo Ha-jin is a top actress.

The memory loss in this drama was not a total one, rather it was a selective amnesia, and it is used to explore themes of trauma, healing, and the fragility of memory. This drama has a gripping romance storyline apart from the amnesia plot and you should see it for both reasons.

The amnesia trope remains a beloved K-Drama cliché for its drama, romance, and second chances, right? But will it ever lose its charm?
